LPBA Winter 2018 Convention

Location TBA

Dear LPBA Members,

After writing to you in my first President’s Message how excited Susan & I were to invite you to share Puerto Rico’s beauty with us, it pains me to write again, so soon, with unfortunate news.  Remember that scene in Apollo 13 where flight director Gene Krantz says “Forget the flight plan, we’re not going to the moon…”? That’s us, LPBA, except our service module explosion was Hurricane Maria, and our moon was Puerto Rico.  In the aftermath of that destructive storm, there is no viable scenario that includes conducting our Winter Convention on that tropical Island starting on February 28th.  Regrettably, we will be invoking the Force Majeure clause of our contract with El Conquistador.  Far more regrettable are the devastation and hardships imposed on this Island and its people, that make this action necessary.

We just conducted a conference call among the LPBA Executive Committee, discussing the unavoidable consequences of Puerto Rico’s current status, and potential replacement venue options.  I think that the consensus is that we are on solid legal footing with regard to the Force Majeure clause, although there is still some small degree of uncertainty.  We have not yet been in direct contact with the hotel, which sustained significant damages, and don’t yet know their position, other than they are closed through at least the end of the year.  We also know and understand that rescue and recovery has been more of an immediate priority in Puerto Rico than convention scheduling.  We anticipate working through Waldorf Astoria or Hilton’s corporate structure as needed to address the issues presented promptly.

We are exploring numerous alternatives for the Winter Convention, literally from one side of the country to the other, and will be looking to schedule the conference from mid-February to mid-March, depending on availability.  My preference is to keep the same Feb 28th to March 4th week, but we’ll see how the chips fall.  One way or another, I want this process to be completed to the point of scheduling certainty in short order; my goal is 10 days, but we’ll see how it goes, it may take 2 weeks.  But I am confident that we will overcome this obstacle.

I genuinely appreciate all of the support received.  There’s nothing like troubleshooting in-flight.  If anyone has any questions, thoughts, concerns, or good ideas (especially that last one), feel free to drop me an email or give me a call.

I look forward to updating you with our progress.

Best regards & Blue skies,
Lloyd Kirschbaum
