LPBA Winter 2023 Convention
El Conquistador Resort
President’s Message – 2022-11-15

LPBA IS GOING TO PUERTO RICO!

As you may have heard or read, the LPBA Winter Convention will be held in Fajardo, Puerto Rico from March 22-26, 2023.  We will be staying at the El Conquistador Resort on the northeast corner of the island.

You will not want to miss this meeting.  Beautiful weather, amazing ocean view rooms, and plenty to do in this tropical paradise.  We are still completing the meeting planning, but will provide you with more information on rates, programs (both CLE and co-pilot), etc., as soon as our planning is complete.

In addition to the usual exceptional CLE, we are looking at such additional/optional events as scuba diving/snorkeling, a nighttime kayak tour of the bioluminescent bay (the water glows in the dark!), and/or a trip to the El Yunque rainforest.  A variety of other watersports and adventure activities are also available nearby.

The resort also has a seaside waterpark featuring a water slide, a lazy river, and a large infinity pool.  And it hosts an Arthur Hills golf course with some significant elevation changes and beautiful ocean views.

My wife, Kristine, will also be planning several copilot events that are sure to engage and entertain the copilots while the rest of us are logging CLE time.

Sponsorships are open and available for what we expect to be a great meeting.  If you would like to join my firm and others in sponsoring, please let Karen or I know.

Please make every effort to attend what should be an amazing meeting!

LPBA Dues Increase

After long discussion and consideration by both the LPBA Board of Directors and the Executive Committee, we arrived at the unfortunate conclusion that LPBA needs to raise its dues.  As you may or may not be aware, the last time LPBA raised its dues was in 2007 – Fifteen years ago.

Since that time, LPBA’s costs have increased at a pace that exceeded our dues and other revenue.  And while we continue to evaluate and take steps to both minimize costs and increase revenue (through membership and other avenues), at the end of the discussion we realized that a dues increase is necessary.

As a result, effective January 1, 2023, LPBA’s regular annual membership dues will increase from $119 to $129 and sustaining annual membership dues will increase from $250 to $275.

This increase will generate approximately $8,000 of additional revenue per year to help offset the shortfall we have been experiencing due, in part, to the fact that our membership dues have not been keeping up with increasing costs.  And it will help LPBA to continue to publish the Journal and provide our membership with the value, benefits, and opportunities we have all come to enjoy.

Why is LPBA still a worthwhile investment of your time and money?   A quarterly Journal, two meetings per year in great locations, active Facebook and LinkedIn presences, the LPBA website, and, of course, the personal relationships. With all of these benefits, we hope that you will understand and accept this needed increase.

Maintaining Connections

On a more somber note, I know many of you are aware of, have seen the videos of, or were even in attendance when the terrible mid-air collision occurred between the Commemorative Air Force’s P-63 Kingcobra and B-17 Flying Fortress “Texas Raiders” over the Dallas Executive Airport on November 12, 2022.  I was also there and saw it happen.

It was fast.  One minute an inspiring display of aviation history, and the next an indescribable horror.  And in a moment, we lost six fellow aviators.  Aviators who were friends, family, colleagues, and mentors.  A terrible loss.

But in the aftermath of this tragedy, I was reminded, by a fellow LPBA member, of the importance of maintaining our connections.  Not just fellow LPBA members twice a year, but the rest of the people in our lives – family, friends, co-workers, colleagues, fellow pilots, etc.

So, in tribute to those aviators we have lost and who have gone west before us, I challenge you to reach out to your connections.  Call them.  Send them e-mail messages.  Go out to lunch/dinner, or for drinks : ).  Say “hello.”  Catch up.  Actively engage with the people in your life who are important to you.

Life happens fast.  We never know what the next flight or day may bring.  Make the most of each day and keep your connections close.

We look forward to seeing everyone in March for sun, fun, and an outstanding CLE program!
