President's Letter

Dear LPBA Members,

Following on the heels of a very-successful conference in Cocoa Beach, your Board has quickly turned its attention to the upcoming Cleveland and Kent, Ohio meeting.  We have secured the elegant and unusual Metropolitan at The 9 as our convention hotel for the dates of the conference itself, JULY 10 - 14, and for three additional days, pre and post, at the lowest rates possible for such a fine accommodation - $199.00 per night plus taxes and fees.  We have a special website on which to register.  The link is:

Cleveland is the hometown of our new treasurer, Darrell Clay, and his wife Mary.  Darrell’s firm, Walter Haverfield, has graciously agreed to host our traditional Wednesday evening Welcome Reception at  their lovely Penthouse office, overlooking Burke Lakefront Airport, Lake Erie and downtown Cleveland.

President-elect, Frank Steinberg, has been putting together another fantastic slate of CLE speakers and topics.  We are proud to announce that the newest member appointed by the President to the five-member National Transportation Safety Board, and well-known General Aviation authority, Bruce Landsberg, will be joining us as a speaker.

The aeronautics program at Kent State University has invited us to spend a day at their campus and private airport.  Their new dedicated, on-airport classroom and flight operations center should have just been completed by the time of our visit.  We may even be the first outside group to see this state-of-the-art facility.  Our own Jason Lorenzon is the Director of the aviation program at Kent State.  He is providing us with unprecedented access to facilities and personnel that is second to none.

Jason also owns a piece of the Wadsworth Airport, and he is planning the best aviation fly-in for us.  We really got back to our roots in Cocoa Beach when 26 aircraft made the trip to the Shuttle Landing Facility.  This is a modern-day (and possibly an all-time) record for LPBA aircraft participation.  Jason promises that we will be able to do much more than demonstrate our spot landing prowess at his airport.  He has already whet my appetite with a suggestion that that we might engage in “flour bombing” and other similar activities from our aircraft.  Cleveland and Kent are centrally located, so they are an easy flight from anywhere in the mid-West, the Northeast, the Great Plains, and even the West coast.  We hope that we can beat our record of 26 LPBA aircraft participating in this summer’s conference.

Registration details will be published shortly.  We will do our best to keep prices affordable, without sacrificing the quality of the facilities or the program.

Another highlight of the program will be a wine tasting hosted by our own oenophile, Jack McNamara.  Jack, in addition to being an expert on wine, also holds the distinction of being the first person to have obtained every certificate and rating from the FAA, and he’s a damn fine attorney too.

Yoga will be back as well.  If the weather is good, it will be hosted on the gorgeous rooftop of our hotel, which features an outdoor restaurant and bar, alongside fantastic views of Cleveland’s past and present.

The food choices immediately around our hotel are phenomenal, with celebrity-chefs flagship restaurants, casual dining, fast food and fine dining all available within walking distance.

Be sure to join us.  This is one conference you won’t want to miss as we close out the 60th anniversary of the founding of LPBA.

Very truly yours,
