Dear Friends:

We are thrilled to share with you the details regarding the Summer 2022 Conference of the Lawyer-Pilots Bar Association! For the first time in the organization’s history, we will be convening in Traverse City, Michigan. Located on the upper eastern shore of Lake Michigan, Traverse City (a/k/a “The Cherry Capital of the World”) features a moderated climate, amazing restaurants, water recreation on Grand Traverse Bay, a variety of cultural attractions, close proximity to the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore (http://www.nps.gov/slbe/index.htm), and more, more, more!

The conference will commence with an opening reception on the evening of Wednesday, July 6, 2022 and conclude with the traditional closing dinner on Saturday night, July 9, 2022. Our venue for all festivities is the Grand Traverse Resort and Spa (http://www.grandtraverseresort.com/), a true resort property that boasts five restaurants and lounges, two indoor and one outdoor pools, two outdoor and one indoor hot tubs, an indoor water playground, a full-service spa and salon, an arcade, 54 holes of championship golf, five indoor and 4 outdoor tennis courts, and a variety of shops. There is a shuttle providing complimentary transportation both to the airport and the nearby Turtle Creek Casino.

A block of rooms have been secured at $285/night, plus applicable fees and taxes. You’ll want to register for a room as soon as possible, because the block size is limited and we anticipate it filling quickly. Upgraded Tower rooms and suites are available starting at $365/night. If you wish this upgrade, please call the hotel directly.

To offset the room rate, we have done our best to keep the registration fee as low as possible - $550 for members and $375 for adult guests.

President-Elect Greg Reigel has assembled an all-star cast of speakers for the CLE program, a copy of which is attached. You’re not going to want to miss any of these presentations, that’s for sure!

We’re still ironing out the specifics of our extracurricular activities, but they tentatively feature a tour of United States Coast Guard Air Station Traverse City, a Pedego bike ride, and - if enough members are able to make the trip by personal aircraft - the long-awaited return of the Spot Landing Exhibition. While the Co-Pilots are also still ironing out the specifics of their agenda, leading contenders include another Pinch Hitter discussion, a Paint ’N Sip session, and a book club discussion. (Book recommendations are welcome; send them to marylouiseclay@gmail.com) Further details about leisure activities will be made available as they are finalized, so please continue to pay close attention to your e-mail In Box.

For those interested in flying themselves to the conference, Cherry Capital Airport (KTVC) is the closest airport. It’s a Class D, towered airport with primary runway 10/28 (7016’ x 150') and cross-wind runway 18/36 (5378’ 150’). Available instrument approaches include an ILS, multiple RNAV (GPS), and a good old-fashioned VOR-A for the adventurous. AvFlight Traverse City (http://www.avflight.com/Network/KTVC) has been notified that it may see a bump in traffic due to our conference, and they are looking forward to our arrival. If you plan to fly-in, please call AvFlight at (231) 929-1126 to provide your tail number, arrival/departure dates and times, etc. Right now, fuel is $6.25 per gallon self-serve/$6.55 per gallon full-serve, though of course that may change as market conditions warrant. For single-engine aircraft, the airport (not the FBO) charges a $5.50 landing fee and a $5.50 per night parking fee. For multi-engine aircraft, fees are $7.18 landing and $7.18/night parking, but can increase depending on aircraft weight. Single-engine aircraft do not incur a handling fee, but multi-engine aircraft do (though it can be waived with a minimum gas purchase). Again, contact AvFlight directly for details or other questions. Though we asked, AvFlight does not offer group fuel discounts.

AvFlight can provide a shuttle to and from the Grand Traverse. If you want a rental car, AvFlight will arrange for that through its vendors Hertz and Enterprise. Call AvFlight, not the rental car company, to make rental car arrangements if you are flying yourself.

Alternatively, several airlines provide commercial service to KTVC. These include American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, and Allegiant Air. Consult their respective websites for schedules and fares.

Our conference coincides with the National Cherry Festival (http://www.cherryfestival.org/). Among other things, the Festival includes concerts on Friday and Saturday night — ZZ Top on Friday, and Boyz II Men on Saturday. Consult the Cherry Festival website for further details about events. Please keep in mind that ride-sharing services are not as commonplace in Traverse City as they have been in other cities LPBA as visited recently, and demand may be extremely high because of the Festival. YOU ARE STRONGLY ADVISED TO RENT A CAR IF YOU DON’T DRIVE YOURSELF TO THE CONFERENCE. Fortunately, there is no daily parking charge at the Grand Traverse. (Valet service is available for $15.) For the same reason, you may want to plan dinners or other activities now and secure advance reservations!

We look forward to seeing everyone in early July in Traverse City. In the meantime, if you have questions, please feel free to get in touch with any of us.

Best regards,
